Embassy Visits New Suez Canal Project

On January 12, Deputy Chief of Mission Thomas H. Goldberger and a U.S. Embassy team were invited by Suez Canal Authority Chairman Admiral Mohab Mameesh to tour the Suez Canal Development Project. The Canal Authority has contacted some of the world’s biggest dredgers and thousands of pieces of earth moving equipment to create the new channel. Embassy staff saw firsthand and up close the work in progress and was one of the first groups to travel by boat on a completed portion of the new channel. When the work is done, it will double the capacity of the canal and dramatically shorten wait times for transiting ships. One of the U.S. companies contributing to the project is Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, and we hope and expect more U.S. companies to be involved in coming months.
