U.S. Embassy Cairo Supports American Photographers for Photopia’s Cairo Photo Week 2021

March 11, 2021

Cairo – The U.S. Embassy in Cairo is partnering with photography hub Photopia to welcome three American photographers to Egypt for the second annual Cairo Photo Week from March 11 – 20, 2021.

The diverse group of photographers includes Maggie Steber, documentary photographer and one of National Geographic Magazine’s 2013 Women of Vision; Shamayim Shacaro, fashion and beauty photographer; and Felix Kunz, portrait expert. They will be joined virtually by two other award-winning American photography experts: Peter DiCampo, photojournalist and co-founder of The Everyday Projects non-profit, and Emma Raynes, from the Magnum Foundation. These experts will share their knowledge during Cairo Photo Week’s workshops, master classes, and exhibitions in historical downtown Cairo.

Ambassador Jonathan R. Cohen noted: “Some of history’s most powerful stories have been told through photographs. We are delighted to bring acclaimed American photographers to Egypt to share their expertise with counterparts from the Middle East and North Africa and continue the tradition of visual storytelling. Our partnership with Photopia is part of the Embassy’s annual half million-dollar contribution to arts organizations and institutions in Egypt to promote cultural and artistic initiatives.”

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo’s participation in Cairo Photo Week 2021 is part of its broader collaboration with Egyptian arts and culture organizations and support of Egypt’s thriving creative economy. Most recently, the U.S. Embassy partnered with art consultancy platform, Art D’Egypte, to promote visual arts. It also is a longtime sponsor of American filmmakers at Gouna International Film Festival and the Cairo International Film Festivals.

Building connections between American and Egyptian artists is just one way the United States partners with the people of Egypt. Since 1978, the U.S. has invested over $350 million in scholarships and exchange opportunities to more than 23,000 Egyptian and American students and mid-career professionals.
