Adult Passport Renewal by Mail

To renew your U.S. Passport and learn more about Adult Passport Renewals by Mail, please use our Passport Services Wizard to prepare your application.

Most passport renewals for adults do not require an in-person appearance. Embassy Cairo now accepts routine adult passport renewal applications by mail for U.S. citizens in Egypt. Please see below for details of eligibility, application requirements, and where to send your application. In-person appointments for this service are not available. This mail in option is not available for children under the age of 16.

Emergency procedures and travel restrictions may change rapidly due to the impact of COVID-19. If you are currently in the United States or another country and your U.S. passport has expired or is due to expire imminently, you should renew your passport before you travel.

Eligibility:
You may renew by mail using Form DS-82 if your passport is undamaged and was:

  • Issued within the last 15-years;
  • Issued with a 10-year validity; and
  • Issued in your current name or you have changed your name since your passport was issued and can submit legal documentation to prove this change.

To apply, you must submit the following:

    • Form DS-82 available online here. You must print and sign the form
    • Your most recent U.S. passport (and one photocopy of your U.S. passport bio page)
    • One passport photograph taken within the past 6 months, size 5cm x 5cm, and with a white background
    • USD $130.00 non-refundable application fee, paid through our online payment system
    • If your name has changed, submit evidence. Examples include: a marriage certificate, change of name deed, statutory declaration or court order. Note: the name change must have taken place after your last passport was issued.

Eligibility: 

If your name was changed in the past year by court order or marriage, you may renew your passport by mail.

To apply, you must submit the following:

    • Form DS-5504 available online here.
      You must print and sign the form
    • Your most recent U.S. passport
    • 1 photocopy of your most recent U.S. passport
    • One passport photograph taken within the past 6 months, size 5cm x 5cm, and on a white background
    • Proof of your name change. Examples include: a marriage certificate, change of name deed, statutory declaration or court order. Note: the name change must have taken place after your last passport was issued.

There is no application fee for applying with Form DS-5504.

Eligibility: 

If your passport contains a printing error or a manufacturing problem. (I.e., if the Department of State is responsible). You may apply by mail using DS-5504 regardless of the issuance date of the valid passport.

To apply, you must submit the following:

    • Form DS-5504 available online here.
      You must print and sign the form
    • Your most recent U.S. passport
    • 1 photocopy of your most recent U.S. passport
    • One passport photograph taken within the past 6 months, size 5cm x 5cm, and on a white background

There is no application fee for applying with Form DS-5504.

Eligibility:

You may renew your passport by mail using form DS-5504 for the replacement of a limited passport book if:

  • Form DS-5504 is signed or received within 1 year from submitted passport issuance date; and
  • You submit the no-fee replacement letter that was received upon issuance of the limited passport.
  • You must submit all supplementary identity or citizenship evidence requested in the no-fee letter.

Applicants must submit the following documents in their applications using the DS-5504:

    • Your most recent U.S. limited validity passport
    • 1 photocopy of your most recent U.S. passport
    • One passport photograph taken within the past 6 months, size 5cm x 5cm, and on a white background
    • The no-fee replacement letter that was received upon issuance of the limited passport
    • All supplementary identity or citizenship evidence requested in the no-fee letter

There is no application fee for applying with Form DS-5504.

Note: you must use form DS-82 to replace a limited validity emergency passport if it was issued more than one year ago.

DO NOT mail your application to the United States.

Photo Requirements:

  • Color photograph taken in last 6 months
  • No eyeglasses (If you must wear eyeglasses for medical reasons, you’ll need to submit a signed statement with your application from a medical professional)
  • 2 x 2 inches (or 5cm x 5cm)
  • White background
  • For babies and small children, it is advisable to have someone take the photograph as photo booth photos may not be accepted. Infants’ eyes are not required to be open

Fees:

The non-refundable application fee for an adult passport renewal using form DS-82 is USD $130.00. If you are applying for a passport and a passport card, total cost is $160. The fee for mail in applications can be paid through our online payment system.

Please note for our online payment system:

  • You can pay using U.S. or international credit or debit card, electronic funds transfer from a U.S.-based bank account, Amazon Pay, or Pay Pal.
  • After you have made your payment, please print your receipt, and include it with your passport application.
  • The online fee option is limited to U.S. citizens residing in Egypt, and online fee payment is currently available for passport book renewals only.

Social Security Numbers:

If you have been issued a social security number (SSN) you must provide it on your application for a U.S. passport. If the name on your social security record does not match the name on your passport application, please make sure that you have completed question 9 on the form – ‘List all other names you have used’.

If you do not have a Social Security Number, you must submit a signed affidavit (PDF 70 KB) OR a statement, signed and dated, that includes the phrase, “I declare under penalty of perjury under the laws of the United States of America that the following is true and correct: I have never been issued a Social Security number by the Social Security Administration.”

How to Submit your Application by Mail:

DO NOT MAIL YOUR APPLICATION TO THE UNITED STATES! All applications submitted by mail are processed at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.

To ensure safe delivery of your application, please use a courier mail service, such as DHL or SLS. The U.S. Embassy is not responsible for applications which get lost in transit to the U.S. Embassy. You may mail your application to the following address:
